Dr. Mukwege has accepted the award and will come to Alicante for the ceremony.
The Balmis Award of Rotary Club Alicante highlights a professional in the medical field of international projection, now celebrating its twelfth recipient.
The award honors Francisco Javier Balmis, another hero in the history of medicine that saved thousands of lives delivering the smallpox vaccine to the overseas Spanish territories, the Philippines and China, within the framework of the Royal Philanthropic Expedition of the Vaccine, at the beginning of the nineteenth century.
Balmis inspired Carlos Canseco, President of Rotary International (1984-1985) to promote the Polio Plus campaign. Polio will be the second eradicated disease in the world, after smallpox, thanks to the vaccine.
Currently, the 200th anniversary of the death of Balmis, and the 10th anniversary of the death of Canseco, are being celebrated.
The European Parliament, the Provincial Council of Alicante, the City Council of Alicante, and other public bodies and private entities are collaborating in this event. This event will raise funds for a global grant in the DR Congo.
